European commissioner for research, innovation and science Màire Geoghegan-Quinn visited Pipistrel

European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Maire Geoghegan-Quinn visited Slovenia on 24 and 24 april 2012.
Among the visits to various universities and dignitaries she also visited Pipistrel.

Geoghegan-Quinn told the press that the EU understood that Slovenia was in a tough economic situation, adding that the Commission wanted to make sure that Slovenia continued investing in competitiveness and development.

She told the press that she is visiting Slovenia to present the Horizon 2020, an EUR 80bn-worth framework programme for research and innovation.
The purpose of the programme is to boost competitiveness and economic growth in the EU aiming at job creation, Geoghegan-Quinn said, adding that the programme was based on three pillars: excellent science, competitive industries and better society.
The programme will encourage cooperation of academics, researchers and scientists with the industry in order to boost competitive position and economic growth in the EU, said Geoghegan-Quinn.


After the visit at Ljubljana University, Geoghegan-Quinn visited ultra-light plane maker Pipistrel in Ajdovščina. She praised the company, adding that future of the EU's economy was in small, innovative companies like Pipistrel.

Pipistrel director Ivo Boscarol said that they were happy to host the commissioner, who could be of great help in getting Slovenia an export agreement with the US, which would allow Pipistrel to export its planes to the US directly "without having to take detours through other countries".

Boscarol introduced to Geoghegan-Quinn his co-workers, the company, the production process and especially the 4-seat aircraft Panthera which had ben successfuly presented to the public only a few days prior at the largest European aviation fair Aero Expo in Germany. The comissioner was also very interested in the specially modified ultralight aircraft used by Matevž Lenarčič to fly around the world.

During her visit, the Commissioner stressed that the small, innovative companies such as Pipistrel represent the future upon which the European economy will be based.
