On 15th and 16th May 2017 the kick-off meeting for the MAHEPA project was held at PipistrelÔÇÖs headquarters at Ajdovscina (Slovenia).

MAHEPA - Modular Approach to Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Architecture ÔÇô is a research project aimed at tackling current limitations of electrically powered aircraft by introducing new serial hybrid-electric powertrains. The project will develop new components in a modular way to power two four-passenger hybrid electric airplanes scheduled to fly in 2020. The first will be equipped with a hybrid powertrain utilizing an internal combustion engine and the second will be a fuel cell hybrid powered aircraft, showcasing the possibilities for zero-emission long distance flight as concrete example of this innovative propulsion technology.

The project is led by the aircraft manufacturer Pipistrel, in cooperation with Compact Dynamics, DLR, University of Ulm, H2Fly, Politecnico di Milano, TU Delft and University of Maribor. The project partnership aims to boost research in the field of low emission propulsion technology to open up possibilities for series production of greener airplanes in order to support European environmental goals in aviation. The main result of MAHEPA project will be novel, modular and scalable hybrid-electric powertrains capable of running on alternative fuels or on hydrogen with zero emissions.

These powertrains are the key technology for future hybrid aircraft enabling economical and environmentally sustainable air travel. Within MAHEPA not only new technologies will be developed, but also regulatory implications, airport infrastructure requirements, airspace procedural practices, operational safety, operating costs and emission models will be studied resulting in a unique outlook for regulators, aviation industry, operators and investors.

The first public presentation of the MAHEPA project will be at the Paris Air Show between 19th and 25th June 2017.

ÔÇťHybrid-electric propulsion will change the way we travel. Pipistrel flew the worldÔÇÖs first two seat electric aircraft more almost exactly ten years ago. Since, battery performance has more than doubled, but the near future long-range flight will be enabled by a combination of batteries and range extending technologies. In project MAHEPA we are contributing to the development of two different four passenger aircraft which will be thoroughly tested in flight. This alone is a historic milestone, but with the envisioned scalability of hybrid electric propulsion technology we will soon see much larger environmentally friendly aircraft capable of flying 19 or more passengers across practical distances.ÔÇŁ

Prihodnost letalskega transporta bo zelena ÔÇô MAHEPA odpira vrata za okolje prijaznej┼íim hibridno-elektri─Źnim letalom


V projektu MAHEPA, katerega uvodni sestanek je potekal 15. in 16. maja 2017 na podjetju Pipistrel d.o.o. Ajdov┼í─Źina, ┼żelimo izbolj┼íati u─Źinkovitost pogonskih sistemov v letalih. Pri─Źakovane inovacije bodo zmanj┼íale vplive na klimatske spremembe, onesna┼żevanje in hrup ter ostale ┼íkodljive vplive zra─Źnega prometa, z uvajanjem novih pogonskih sistemov.


MAHEPA - Modular Approach to Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Architecture ÔÇô je raziskovalni projekt, ki je usmerjen k re┼íevanju trenutnih omejitev elektri─Źnih letal z uvajanjem novih, serijskih hibridnih-elektri─Źnih pogonskih sklopov. Z modularnim pristopom bomo razvili okolju prijaznej┼íe komponente za pogon dveh ┼ítiri-sede┼żnih potni┼íkih hibridno-elektri─Źnih letal, ki bosta prvi─Ź poleteli leta 2020. Prvo letalo bo opremljeno s hibridnim pogonskim sklopom, kjer energijo proizvaja motor z notranjim zgorevanjem. V drugo letalo bo vgrajena inovativna tehnologija pogona na vodikove gorivne celice, kar bo dokazalo mo┼żnost razvoja letal za dolge polete brez emisij.

Projekt vodi slovenski proizvajalec letal Pipistrel, sodelujejo ┼íe: Compact Dynamics, DLR, H2Fly, Politecnico di Milano, Technische Universiteit Delft, Univerza v Mariboru in University of Ulm. Cilji projekta sledijo evropskim okoljskim zahtevam za letalstvo, ki narekujejo 70 % zmanj┼íanje izpustov toplogrednih plinov do leta 2050. Klju─Źni rezultat projekta MAHEPA bo nov, modularni hibridno-elektri─Źni pogonski sklop za letala, ki bo deloval na alternativna goriva ali vodik in imel potencial za uporabo na ve─Źjih letalih.

Tovrstni pogonski sklopi predstavljajo klju─Źno tehnologijo za razvoj hibridnih letal, ki bodo omogo─Źala ekonomi─Źne in okolju prijazne letalske prevoze. V projektu MAHEPA bomo razvili tako nove pogonske tehnologije, kot tudi preu─Źevali vplive novih predpisov, zahtev letali┼íke infrastrukture, postopkov zra─Źnega prometa, varnosti obratovanja in obratovalnih stro┼íkov ter modelov emisij. Rezultati bodo koristni predvsem upravnim organom, odgovornim za sprejem predpisov, letalski industriji in vlagateljem.

ÔÇťHibridno-elektri─Źni pogon bo spremenil na─Źin na┼íega potovanja. Ravno pred desetimi leti je Pipistrel poletel s prvim dvo-sede┼żnim elektri─Źnim letalom na svetu. Od takrat se je zmogljivost baterij skorja podvojila, kljub temu pa so zenkrat dolgi leti mo┼żni zgolj s kombinacijo baterij in drugih tehnologij, ki omogo─Źajo dalj┼íe polete. V projektu MAHEPA bomo prispevali k razvoju dveh razli─Źnih pogonov za ┼ítiri-sede┼żna potni┼íka letala, ki bosta preizku┼íena v zraku. ┼Że to samo po sebi predstavlja velik mejnik, vendar lahko s prenosom hibridno-elektri─Źnih tehnologij na ve─Źja letala kmalu pri─Źakujemo okolju prijaznej┼ía letala tudi za 19 ali ve─Ź potnikov, ki bodo zmo┼żna leteti na prakti─Źnih razdaljah┬ź.
